SIZE MATTERS
OUT & ABOUT: Hastings/St. Louis Park
I had to see the next big player out of MN--Catherine Hintz, 6-7, 2007, C from Hastings. I thought her frame looked solid, she is not whispy, a rail or overweight. She has decent feet, decent speed (by no means a fast break player), and kept the ball high on rebounding. Hastings played a 2-3 zone to keep Hintz near the hoop and intimidate StLP. Her presence was felt on the defensive end as Hastings won 45-31. (what a difference a day makes. Centennial had 44 and Roseville 37 at half yesterday.)
Offensively Hintz took 7 shots from the floor. She made four. She was 3 of 4 on post ups; 1 of 2 on out of bounds plays, and 0 of 1 on put back attempts. Her mechanics, best viewed from the free throw line, need some polishing, but her form is fine. Hintz ended up with 13 points to lead both teams.
My guess is she has not had a lot of competitive time in her younger day. This will come as she gains more experience on the varsity court. She did not play varsity last year, and that is why she was not listed in the book.
Comparing Hintz with the recent 6-6+ players from MN she is ahead of Toni Melancon (Osseo '94). Melancon made her impact as a senior. She never really played until her sophomore year, but she was all state as a senior. Hintz is miles and miles ahead of Kim Bell (Mpls Washburn '98). She is more fluid than either of these two.
My guess is she will continue to improve as it takes bigger kids more time to grow into their body. She will no doubt go to some D1 school in one of the big six conferences. There were only 12 players 6-7+ in D1 and D2 last year (11 in D1).
