OUT & ABOUT: ARMSTRONG/COOPER
This game is a neighborhood rivalry. Armstrong has won five of these games in a row. Cooper however came out in the first half with more energy and crispness in it's play and took a lead at half time 25-22. Armstrong was flat and sloppy with the ball. The speed of Cooper caused problems for the bigger Armstrong squad. Cooper held the lead until 6:58 left in the game when the Falcons made a layup and free throw. Armstrong took better care of the ball in the second half.
Player Evaluations:
Armstrong: There are basically three scorers on this team-Megan Shea (13); Jackie Swenson (20--15 in the second half); and Rachel Gunderson (18). Swenson scored from the low post at will because Cooper tried to defend behind. Swenson did pop a three in the first half from the right side. Defensively Swenson can show improvement. She fouled out, but after the outcome was in hand. Gunderson can score outside (1 three), and slashing. She also was 7/8 at the line. Shea is a big perimeter player (6-0) and has the most ability of the three. I would like it if she grabbed the game by the throat.
Cooper: Their prime scorer is Kelsey Conrad (15---11 in the first half) Conrad can hit out (1 three, a slash. A prime factor in the Armstrong win was they found a way to contain Conrad in the second half. Condrad finished second in the State 100 track meet the past two years. Kelsey Thingvold (13) plays hard on both ends of the floor and can elevate. Sammy Winkelman (13) has decent inside moves as she was going by the Armstrong defense all night, however she did not finish her shots. Ashlee Lemon is the point guard and has good ball handling skills for such a young player. Her behind the back dribble left Falcons standing still a couple of times on the evening. As far as her scoring threat--she is smaller than those guarding her and she did not attempt that many outside shots. She did hit one three on the night.
