6AAA CHAMPIONSHIP
The game felt a lot closer than the halftime and final margins (28-18; 46-32). The story that unfolded over the 36 minutes was much more about guards and quickness than inside power. Aaryn Booker picked up two quick fouls and was out of the game by 17:12 in the first half. Orono's Sarah Luse, meanwhile, racked up fouls and did not match up well with the Islanders, so she was a non-factor, scoring 2 in limited minutes. Islanders' outside threat Anna Kovalchuk was cold early but found her range later, thanks to a certain whirling Dervish making things happen on both ends of the court. Freshman guard Tori Rule was the difference-maker; her hustle and explosiveness created havoc on defensive end, and her court awareness and good eye led to five assists that broke the game wide open. Kovalchuk and Carissa Wolyniec bombed away from outside, combining for 18 points. Most teams tend to shorten their bench in the postseason, but DeLaSalle Coach Frye distributed minutes among ten players. Orono guard Shelby Barnum (7 pts) and the Spartans' bench (14 of the total 32 points; 8 from freshman Haley Erickson) made a spirited run for the trophy. With just one senior on the squad and a bevy of talented newcomers, Orono should challenge for the section title for years to come.
On to the state quarterfinals!
