2A SOUTH SUBSECTION FINAL
GRANADA-HUNTLEY-EAST CHAIN mustangs 49
NICOLLET raiders 31

Coach Teas & I left Mankato and went up 169 to Gustavus in St. Peter for this contest. We made it in plenty of time but the parking situation at Gustavus is horrible. We had to park in the back 40 and walk a half mile to the gym. When we arrived, four minutes had already sped by.

The #2 team in the state--GHEC---used it's size to good effect in a convincing win over #3 seed Nicollet. When we arrived it was 7-7, and after that GHEC kept building on the lead attacking inside in the half court, transitioning when the opportunity presented itself, and stroking a few threes if the defense was preoccupied with the 6-3, 6-2 inside game of GHEC. But it was on the defensive end GHEC put its stamp on the game. Nicollet was only able to score 8 points in the second half, 6 by Kristin Hulke.

In the first half the key break point came on a 14-5 run as GHEC turned a one point deficit to a 25-16 lead. 10 of those points came from the muscle inside. GHEC has three posts that are 6-0+ and the paint was theirs. The Nicollet zone also provide GHEC to test their long range attack. Three different Mustangs connected from beyond the arc.

An 11-2 run to open the second half left no doubt at the outcome. GHEC led 42-25 at that point. Nicollet switched over to man to no avail. GHEC patiently worked their flex to get the shot they wanted.

GHEC and Centennial are the only undefeated teams left in Minnesota. The Mustangs are 25-0. Nicollet ends the year at 17-12. Friday GHEC faces Cedar Mountain-Comfrey, upset winners over #1 north seed Sleepy Eye St. Mary's 47-40

No the camera isn't broken. Coach Teas is eager to see his handiwork. Tomorrow, with no games on tap, I will be adding some copy and photos to these out & abouts (and those going back to last Thursday).

Next up: Another Spy Out & About: 4AAAA semis.
