OUT AND ABOUT
Tonight I attended the St. Paul Central/Holy Angels game. This featured Angel Robinson (SP Central) and Jessie Miller (Holy Angels). Robinson came out and popped a three on her first shot. Central had a 10 point lead at half. Miller won the scoring contest 22 to 21. Miller has some flash on her passes, but her teammates are not quite ready to play at that level. Holy Angels came back in the second half (when Robinson was sitting due to fouls), in fact they took the lead 58-57, but could not maintain that. Central had a better inside presence even if they were younger. These two players, along with Buford of Central knew where to be and what shots to take.

MN ACTION
The HS season opened this weekend and some of the results are expected, and some unexpected.
Hopkins won the Hamline tournament beating Centennial 58-55 in a battle of top 10 teams.
Some top scorers in games this week include
Kali Olstad, Elgin-Millville 42 points in a 92-63 win over Kenyon-Wanamingo. Olstad will join her sister at Concordia St. Paul next season.
Jenna Smith, Bloomington Kennedy dropped in 37 points in a 103-27 win over overmatched Mpls Henry. Smith will attend Illinois next season.
Two teams that were in the top 10s in their respective classes were upset. Waseca lost to DeLaSalle in the Red Wing tournament, and Eden Valley-Watkins lost to Holy Family in the Norwood-Young America Tournament.
Mpls Roosevelt is on the rise. They won the Red Wing tournament with wins over Red Wing (57-31) and De La Salle (59-53). Roosevelt was 2-16 last year.

MICHIGAN STATE TOURNAMENT
The Quarterfinals are on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at various sites

Clarkston vs Saginaw Arthur Hill at Saginaw Heritage
B

Kingsley vs Houghton at Petoskey
D
Battle Creek St. Philip vs Lansing Christian at Michigan Center
Auburn Hills Oakland Christian vs Portland St. Patrick at Imlay City
Frankfort vs Leland at Traverse City Central
Engadine vs Ewen-Trout Creek at Escanaba
Class A will feature 6-8 Alyssa DeHaan of Grandville. She is averaging 28 ppg the last three games. Southfield-Lathrup and AH Avondale will match two teams who were #1 during the year, but both have injuries. AH Avondale lost China Threatt in the second meeting with SL, while Jerica Hughes has been dinged up with an ankle for SL. It will be hard to go against King with their two D1 signees against Monroe.
In B, Detroit Country Day looks to be unstoppable. Defensively they are giving up 21 ppg in their last four games. They know how to get it done.
In Class C it looks as if Inkster will take the title.
The Class D quarterfinal between Oakland Christian and Portland St. Patrick may provide the champion.

Region Finals, Michigan BB Factories
TODAY (NOV 23) FINALS
Today most of the finals will take place. A few happened yesterday with Auburn Hills Avondale (minus China Threatt) beating West Bloomfield (minus Randall Hurst) 61-38.
Today
A/5 7 pm Fraser at Southfield-Lathrup
B/11 7 pm Detroit Country Day vs Mt. Clemens at Pontiac Notre Dame
B/12 7 pm St. Clair vs. Flint Powers at Goodrich
C/19 6 pm Inkster at Madison Heights Bishop Foley
D/27 7 pm Auburn Hills Oakland Christian vs Allen Park Cabrini at Waterford Our Lady of Lakes
WHICH SCHOOL IN MICHIGAN IS THE BB FACTORY?
If we look at raw numbers, Detroit King leads with 10 players (as of 2005) with those players averaging 4.57 ppg. Detroit Renaissance has six with 4.77 ppg. The Biggest production comes out of Detroit Country Day with six players averaging 9.62 ppg (that was 2005)
Looking at Starters (2005) again King leads with 4 players (Jeanette Woodbury-Wright State, Rhea Mays-Wright State, Keshonda Williamson-Northern Illinois, Tishona Gregory-Florida) their combined ppg was 7.18; Detroit Country Day had 3 players start (Elise Morrison-Dartmouth, Carrie Moore-Western Michigan, Brittney Dixon-Central Connecticut State). These three combined for a 14.3 ppg.
Both schools are living up to their factory potential again with King sending two to D1 programs next season (Laquisha Whitfield to Michigan, Jasmine Stone to Temple). Country Day has some young talent that will arrive at that destination in the future.

1 Signing, beginnings and endings
Signing
MI
Andrea Clancy, North Huron to Ferris State
Beginnings
Both Minnesota and North Dakota opened practice today. First games begin as early as November 23rd, but most will take place on the 25th. Sections begin Feb. 23 and the state tournament will be held March 15th to 18th at Target Center in Minneapolis and Williams Arena at the Campus of the University of Minnesota
Minnesota will be playing 36 minute games this year (two 18 minutes halves). Scoring will go up, but don't be fooled by bigger numbers. A 22.5 ppg now will be like 20 last year. 20 ppg now will be like 17.8 last year. 40 ppg on defense was considered tight, but that would increase to 45 now.
North Dakota's first games will take place during the week of Nov. 28th.
Endings
Michigan began Districts tonight (check out the MHSAA site for schedule). Most of the rated teams should prevail in the early round. District semis take place on Wednesday, Nov 16, most finals on Friday Nov. 18, some on Sat. Nov. 19. Updates on games to watch will be posted later.

Which states produce winners
Winning States
I have wondered which states produce winners. On page 2 in the college book I publish we know which states produce the most, but that does not measure the quality. I then looked at the wins and losses that the players in that state produced at the colleges they attended in D1. The results were interesting. On the roster the top three were
State Pct. (#rostered)
1. North Dakota .710 (1)
2. Iowa .609 (47)
3. District of Columbia .597 (15)
4. Utah .581 (45)
5. Delaware .574 (11)
But if we look at the starters only
1. Vermont .629 (2)
2. Iowa .621 (15)
3. Nebraska .610 (10)
4. District of Columbia .587 (4)
5. South Dakota .581 (6)
If you notice most of these states are smaller in size. What of the bigger producing states--who has the best quality?
Again looking only at the starters from these states (above 50 starters)
1. Florida .538 (51)
2. Texas .531 (107)
3. Tennessee .526 (62)
4. Ohio .520 (74)
5. Georgia .510 (58)
Florida also produced a .537 for rostered players, the top for the bigger states.

Lakeville South: Ben Bauer
Pat Barrett is not coaching Fridley this season. The MN hall of fame coach did not deserve this fate. He ran a competitive program and is a class act. Best wishes to him on the future. Some school will be gaining a coaching treasure.
My memories of 5AA basketball games with Fridley (I was at Osseo) were some of the most intense games with bodies flying all over the court, the crowd hanging from the rafters--Great atmosphere.
