6AAAA CHAMPIONSHIP
MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH tigers 51, HOPKINS royals 42

In a highly anticipated match South beat Hopkins 51-42. South canned nine 3s on the night and Tayler Hill had four of them on the way to 22 points.

This was physical right from the start. South's Taquoia Hammick was leveled on the very first possession. Hopkins was getting more than one shot early, but shots number two and three weren't falling either. Steph Sension of Hopkins scored inside for the first points of the night. Gabby Roberts (Hammick's replacement) did the honors for South. Hopkins had a 9-4 lead after a Hanna Muegge lay up. Then the first of nine 3s for South found their mark. Tayler Hill knocked one down from the left wing. Three possessions later Tyisha Smith delivered to put South back in front 10-9. That started a see saw sequence where there were five lead changes. Smith delivered another trey for a 17-13 lead. Hopkins tied it up at 19 on a drive by Brianna Williams. South surged forward to 26-21 on another 3ball from Hill. Hopkins answered and tied the game at 30 on a &1 one opportunity for Elofson (without the one however). At half South led 30-29.

Hopkins took their final lead on their second possession of the half as Elofson sank two free throws. Then Ephesia Holmes, who had not scored in the first half, Hit a three to put the Tigers back up 33-31. A long two by Muegge tied the game, but South was just warming up from behind the arc, Hill answered and then on the next possession Ameshia Kearney drained a triple from the left wing for a 39-34 lead. With sub changes and defensive assignements in flux somehow Sension (6-2) was guarding Tyisha Smith (5-3). In the ensuing penetration and kick Hill delivered another from downtown for a 42-36 lead. Holmes made South's last field goal with about 10:15 to go. Holmes scored last point on a free throw for 8 possessions at the 9:46 mark to make it 46-38. After that South went into a stall and Hopkins slapped their 1/2/2 half court trap on. The result was 8 straight empty trips in 8 minutes. Four of those possessions ended in turnovers, two on offensive fouls. Meanwhile Hopkins had struggles of their own. They had the same 8 possession drought that South did, so didn't make up any ground. Only two ended on turnovers as nothing dropped. The Royals did get two put backs by Sension and Rowland to make the score 46-42 with about 2 minutes left. South found the bottom of the net again at the 1:44 mark on a free throw by Kearney. After that it was all at the charity stripe for South. Hopkins' three attack missed their mark for three straight possessions. South was headed back to the bright lights.
