ORONO spartans 48,
DELANO tigers 44, overtime
#2 seed Orono rallied from 8 down early in the second half to beat Delano in overtime 48-44 in the rubber match between the two highway 12 schools. Shelby Barnum scored the first four points for Orono in overtime. This game had rallies, lost opportunities and, to paraphrase the latest movies "there will be blood."
Delano drew first blood, but it was Orono that held the early advantages up 9-4 after
a pair of Barnum free throws. Delano tied it at 9 on a Ashley Torblaa basket and the rest of the half both teams were neck and neck. There were five ties in the first half. There was a technical foul called after a jump ball call. Apparently Orono's Libby Kruse said something the refs didn't appreciate. That is when Delano tied it up at 9. Delano was scoring on transition while Orono had 9 points at the line in the first half, a six point differential. Orono was able to get the ball inside against the Delano zone. Cecily Checkal of Delano was aggressive and all over the floor. She was the engine for the Tigers. She had 6 points, and 7.5 d wraps in the first half. Barnum had 9 for Orono, five at the line. The Spartans tied the game up right before half at 27 with a &1 by Erin Garfield.
Delano started the second half with vigor. They scored the first eight points and it looked like the begining of a route at 35-27. The hard charging Checkal again was in the forefront with four points, a steal and an assist. After the time out she would only score two more points. The Spartans made sure they looked inside on their next possession. Sarah Luse was able to get the ball at the block and had &1 opportunity. The critical factor on that possession was that Delano's center Bingea picked up foul #3. She sat down and the Delano mojo soon was a distant memory. The Tigers fell into a 10 possession drought. Three were turnovers, but there were some missed opportunities. Delano had a couple of transition chances that petered out. Also Brynn Caslavka took a shot and a rebound was there for the taking, if folks were aware. instead Garfield got the board. Orono tied the game at 39 on a Luse post up. They took their first lead in the second half on another Luse post up. Both were assisted by Barnum. Then Orono looked to milk the clock, but that took them out of their rhthym. They turned it over on two of their next three possessions. However Delano was dealing with their own problems. Cecily Checkal had a bloody elbow and had to leave the game to get patched up. Once she returned she had to leave to change her jersey as it had blood on it. After a fumble by Chelsea Durland, Delano had a crack at the win trailing 42-41. Cody Krieg let a distance shot fly which was off the mark. Caslavka rebounded and was fouled. She made the first and then Orono tried to ice her with a time out. It worked as she missed. Durland rebounded and the game was destined for OT.
The tip went to Orono and Barnum scored on the first possession. Delano's first tw
o possessions ended up as turnovers. However Orono wasn't effiecient either. A fumble by Barnum ended up in Caslavka's hands and Krieg tied the game at 44. There was about 36 seconds left when Barnum scored again for the game winner. With 13.9 left Orono was fouled and Luse missed both free throws. Delano's Teresa Vernig got the rebound and took time out at mid court. After checking the defense, they took another time out with 10 seconds left. The Tigers tried to set up Checkal for the last shot. Bingea was called for an illegal screen with 4.6 seconds left. It was her fifth and the game belonged to Orono. Tara Schinke was fouled right away and she scored twice at the line. Checkal tried a desperation three, which Orono tried to block (probably ill advised), but it was off the mark and there were no fouls. Orono advances to play #1 DeLaSalle on Saturday.
