MN STARS SHOOTOUT
Lynx 84, Starzz 74

This game had subplots: Maurika Carlisle's ongoing comeback after missing last winter and this summer; Theairra Taylor vs Ebony Black new teammates at St. Paul Central; youngsters thrown into the fire.

The game started off with the Lynx scoring at the wrong basket, but I believe the points weren't given to the Starzz. The Lynx put some distance between themselves and the Starzz with scoring on 5 of 6 possessions on an 11-2 run. They added another 8-0 run with four straight possessions later. Tanya Kaufmann had two consecutive scores from the right and left corners. The Lynx built their lead up to 30-18 during the half. The Starzz were able to shave two off that and the game hung around the 10 point mark for the rest of the half 47-37 Lynx. Carlisle's prognosis at the half: the knee is fine as she racked up 11 points.

The Lynx also had runs in the second half. They scored four straight times early in the half on an 8-0 run. Kaufmann again had four points during the episode. The Starzz were able to get back into the game, but the clock was running out their chances. On the Starzz last 15 possessions they scored 10 times with a 19-10 run. Tara Heiser had 13 in the second half for the Starzz with Ebony Black cashing in 11.

Whitney Trecker, New Prague 13, 10, 130.0, .700 picked up a lot of points due to fouls (7 points from fouls) . able to hit and still score.

STARZZ
Chari Lehnertz, Winona 4, 9, 44.4, .222 big post. RF: needs to make quicker decisions and get quicker feet.
Cayla Collison, Verndale 8, 9, 88.9, .444 boards.
Tara Heiser, Watertown, SD 21, 24, 87.5, .458 very aggressive (24 possessions) on offense. can get up & down the floor. RF: forced a lot of offense.
Devin Bowlin, Winona Cotter 9, 10, 90.0, .400 tough point guard. Got inside and boarded. good decisions. Actually helped her teammates look better. RF: elbow too far away from body sometimes on dribble.
Ebony Black, St. Paul Central 17, 15, 113.3, .600 played with more energy than I have seen in the recent past. tough off the dribble. Lefty. had some nifty passes when D collapsed on her.
Breanna Erickson, Simley 14, 13, 107.7, .538 perimeter player. moved well without the ball, nice cuts.

Even though Ebony Black's team lost, I was impressed with her all around play on both ends. Many players were tempting.

NORTH TARTAN SHOWCASE
Team 8 74, Team 1 53

Team 8 won this game because they were a bit more consistent that team 1. These events are set up for up & down action---25 minute running time, kids get a point if they are fouled, and they only shoot one free throw. No one came here to watch a free throw parade. With all the kids, and no one really familiar with everyone, offense, or those players that are more aggressive, have the better days.
In this case team 8 led 17-12, but exploded on a 26-6 run. At one point Team 8 scored on five straight possessions with different players contributing each time. Most of the times if a player didn't score, it was due to missed shots. In other words, turnovers and defensive pressure weren't really factors. Shakila Boler had 11 points in the first half for team 8.
In the second half Team 8 again had a 20-6 run to open the half. Jenny Gilbertson had a strong beginning this half with six points in the run. Team 8 led 66-30 at this point. Team 1 also had their own run with a 15-4 run later in the half to make it 71-49. They also had a five possession sequence in which they scored. Tempestt Wilson had 10 points in this half.

Team 8 had better speed up and down the line up. They connected quicker, and had better positions on rebounding.

Earlier in the day I saw Team 3 and Team 4 won by Team 4 47-42. Since I didn't see the full game I am not running the numbers on this game. In that game Katelin Loberg was the force for team 3 inside. When I was watching she had six to lead both teams. She can run and moves well for a big kid. But it was Team 4 that won. They had more perimeter shooters like Ana Garcia and Katie Zavodny helped 4 over the top.

TWO FOR THE 30TH
Today there were two showcase events six minutes from each other. North Tartan held their events at Bloomington Kennedy and the MN Stars were at Bloomington Jefferson.

I was at Kennedy first, saw a game and a half, at Jefferson I saw two games and parts of others at Jefferson.

The similarities and differences: Jefferson had more players and more courts going.
Jefferson also had more youngsters in attendance.
Both sites had players going all out to get noticed.
Both venues were very accomodating and I was treated nicely.
I want to thank both organizations for their kindness.

So I will start out with the NT event with the games I saw there. I will then have two more postings on the Jefferson games. I did not see any team more than once.

Next up: the NT games; 2nd half of 3 vs 4; and 1 vs 8 complete game.

WOLFF VERBALS
Janessa Wolff, Park Rapids is headed to Penn State according to sources close to Penn State. The 6-3 center averaged 25.6 ppg last year for 22-5 Park Rapids. Wolff was 2nd team AP all state last year. She played with North-Tartan's 16 team this year, the girlsbasketball recruit's team of the year. She is the 13th toverbal from MN, the 8th to go D1, and the 4th to go to a school in one of the big six conferences. North Tartan has sent Alyssa Karel, and Tara Steinbauer to Wisconsin, and Macie Michelson to South Dakota State.

Richard "Whitey" Gilbertson, former Clinton coach, will be inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He coached at Clinton for 29 years with a record of 510-158. His teams made it to state three times and won in 2003. More in the Beloit Daily News.

In the marquee matchup last night #1A Auburn Hills Avondale edged #1B Detroit Country Day 46-44. Katherine Talmage made two free throws with 25 seconds left to give AHA a 46-42 lead. From the Detroit Free Press.

The Detroit News led with Belleville's win over Inkster 52-39. It was the first time Belleville senior Tayler Manley experienced a win against Inkster.

#4 Lansing Waverly topped Eaton Rapids 58-48.
Tracy Nogle scored for Okemos with 2.5 seconds left in a 38-36 win over Lansing Everett.
Dansville beat Jackson Christian 35-32.

Kachine Alexander, Benilde-St. Margaret's has made a verbal to Iowa. BSM won the AAA State tournament last year and averaged 12.7 ppg. Alexander played for Triple Threat this summer. Minnesota now has 12 players total that have verballed, 7 to D1, 3 to the Big Six conference schools.

SUMMER CAMPS & THE FIX

Rachel Sheldon, Janesville Craig, is fortunate to be doing anything right now. The basketball player that started sometimes for JC was banged up pretty bad from a car accident on June 30. She is golfing now and made the sections. Story from the Janesville Gazette.

WI
Wisconsin not only is having issues with private schools apparently they are rethinking the co-op issue. It mainly is a hockey issue right now brought about by Madison having 7 schools for a girls co-op, but they are looking at the whole package. From Dennis Semrau in the Capital Times.

MN Fall League Week #2 Rehash

FALL LEAGUE POLL & MORE

There are 11 undefeated teams in the MN Fall league's 9 divisions.

Starting off at the top (Blue) A split squad St. Paul Central knocked off the other undefeated teams at Armstrong (Eastview, and Mpls South). I wrote about both these games, go back to Sunday's postings to catch up.

In the white (Forest Lake) Centennial Red is at 4-0 and Eden Prairie at 3-0. Hopkins is breathing down their necks at 3-1, the only loss coming to EP. CR and Hopkins play this week at 2:25. This should be the game of the week.

In the Red (Kennedy) division Burnsville & Kennedy are both 3-0. Central's other split squad is 3-1 with an overtime loss to Kennedy. Burnsville meets in the last weekend of the year. The red is looking like the toughest league, not the 3rd best.

Minnetonka rules the Green at 4-0. They have already beat White Bear Lake, the closest challenger 36-33 in the first week. Tonka plays Orono and Kennedy's 2nd team this week.

In the Orange St. Paul Johnson and Osseo Black (2nd) are sitting on 4-0 record. Something will have to give this weekend as they meet at 2:25.

The Yellow division has Chaska Black (2nd) and Minnehaha tied with 3-0 records. Those two will meet on the 8th.

Everything is a jumble in the Purple with Mounds View, and Eastview (2nd) tied at 3-1. This is a wide open division.

In the Pink division Minnetonka (2nd) and Wayzata (2nd) are both 3-0

And in the Black, the long trips in have been worth it for Barnum, located up by Duluth, now that gas is 2.09 and that the team is 3-0.

According to sources in Wisconsin, Tara Steinbauer, Bloomington Kennedy, has made a verbal to Wisconsin.

TOURNAMENT NEWS

The WIAA are proposing to have 5 classes for their state tournament. They also are thinking about moving all private schools up a division. The private issue is a huge deal in boys basketball. A potential road block is that D1, which has 8 now, would only have 4 teams in the new plan. More in the Capital Times. Also the Appleton Post-Crescent.

Jim Stephens, former Baraboo coach has been named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. He had a 240-72 record in 15 years. More from the Baraboo Republic.

THE FIX
True Hoop has thoughts on how to fix the mess that USA basketball finds itself in. The winds of change, or maybe is it a breeze, are building. The big power brokers will make sure they don't get hurt however. The whole summer idea is never about team, but about me, me, me. I have known players that blew off their HS games "saving" themselves for when it really mattered--summer ball. They are just deluding themselves. My numbers from the winter and summer indicate that HS ball is a much better aesthetic experience. Summer ball has bigger, faster, stronger, better players going against the like, but as I have stated in the past and will state again now HS ball is more like college than summer ball. The only thing summer ball has is the above statement. But as far as team, or individual skill development? Look elsewhere.

Again from True Hoop: It is looking for people that are experts in developing players. In other words High School coaches. David Thorpe is mentioned in the article, but I am afraid it is not Coach Thorpe of Osseo Oriole Fame.

Has anyone looked at how the East Germans identified and trained their athletes. I read a book on their methods. It is buried somewhere in the basement. Obviously steroids would be a no-no, but they had an efficient way of eyeing talent and developing it.
Right now it is whoever has the money. I have always felt there are many, many players that never develop because their is no support for the kid. Either they don't know or circumstances are stacked against them. The key is to identify early. I will try to find that book and put it up on the site some time.

UP TUESDAY ACTION
Houghton roughed up Ironwood 73-30. Houghton, defending C champs are undefeated at 7-0.
Lake Linden-Hubbell held Baraga to 28 points in a 37-28 win. The week before Baraga was on fire. LLH had the hose out last night. Both stories from the Houghton Mining Gazette.

Manistique beat St. Ignace 63-56. St. Ignace led at the half and at the end of the third quarter.
Escanaba had a 23-6 4th quarter enroute to a 52-39 win over Gladstone. Both stories from the Escanaba Daily Press.

FROM THE REST OF MICHIGAN
Kalamazoo Loy Norrix had no problems with Portage Northern in a 64-44 win. This & more in the Kalamazoo Gazette.

#1C Saginaw Nouvel Catholic and they snapped #8C Michigan Center's 50 game regular season win streak 46-34. Also more games (including Juanita Cochran's) in the Saginaw News, and the Jackson Citizen Patriot.

Muskegon Central Catholic shutdown Shelby 53-32. From the Muskegon Chronicle.

Flint Southwestern escaped with a 50-48 win over Bay City Central. From the Bay City Times.

North Huron had to rally for a 35-34 win over Caseville. From the Huron Daily Tribune.

The Mt. Clemens Battling Bathers, that is right--Bathers, beat Warren Woods Tower 54-45. This was a Macomb Area Blue Conference match up. This game & more from the Detroit Free Press.

The Detroit News leads with OAA (Oakland Activities Association) action with #6 Rochester beating Pontiac Northern 56-52.

Portland upset DeWitt 34-20. That wasn't the half time score either. DeWitt was undefeated until this game. From the Lansing State Journal.

Micah Jones scored the game winner with 32 seconds left to help Lansing Eastern hold off Haslett 41-40.
Webberville beat Bellevue 43-39. Both stories in the Lansing State Journal.

On ABC12 you can see undefeated #3B Bullock Creek beat Chesaning who was also undefeated heading into the game.

As was rumored yesterday from the Crookston Times, Kris Evje, last year's assistant, is now the head coach at Crookston. Evje's responsibility was the freshman squad last year. But if you read the last paragraph it doesn't sound like the administration is 100% on board.

VIDEO STREAMING
Iowa will be putting all state tournament games on the internet with live feeds this year. This is from the Des Moines Register.

FIXING AMERICA'S SPORTS
Here are two articles on what is wrong with American's approach to sports development. In the Jim Litke article says it will take more $$$$ to entice these players to kick the world's rear end. He says that this is the fast way to get it done. I don't agree with this approach. But in the article Michael Jordan says that it is the amount of games and practices that may have to be addressed. Also tv highlights have been blamed. Pete Thamel from the New York Times says the whole youth structure needs to be addressed. You will have to register for the NYT story, but it is free. Brian McCormick has been making suggestions on how to improve the instruction and now people are starting to come around to his views.

TRANSFERS
Elise Adams, a 6-2 C from Bethany Academy, will be atttending Bloomington Jefferson this season. She averaged 7.5 ppg last year.

MAURADER NAME CHANGE
Minneapolis Community College will change their Maurader nickname. Apparently it sends the wrong message.
The University of Mary, which also has the Maurader name, looked at the issue earlier this year and decided against it.

MICHIGAN HS
The OAA D1 (Oakland Activities Association Division 1) has three teams in the top 10 in class A with #1 Auburn Hills Avondale, #3 Clarkston, and #6 Rochester. But Rochester is the big surprise. The Detroit News has more on their rise.

Meridian is 6-1 and is ready to take a shot at the Jack Pine conference. From the Midland Daily News.

Wayland has rebounded after starting the season 1-3, with two big wins last week in the O-K Gold conference. They beat Byron Center and South Christian, both undefeated at the time. Wayland was helped with the return of Felicia Stora from a groin injury. More from the Grand Rapids Press.

THE 30TH EVENTS
There will be dueling showcase events not too far apart this weekend.
The Minnesota Stars will be hosting the Adidas Stars Shootout at Bloomington Jefferson. The games start at 10 am and the last games start at 5:30.
Who is attending? The Stars list 158 players so far with players coming from as far away as Kansas.

In the same school district at Bloomington Kennedy North Tartan will run the North Tartan-All Iowa Attack Showcase. There are 51 players registered so far according to the website.

Blue Star is running a Fall Showcase at the Schaumburg Sport Center. A 99 players are listed so far. There are some Wisconsin & Iowa players headed to this event.

The Battle of the Programs a 20 team tournament will be held at Schaumburg the same day, and an 18 team tournament Elite Oktoberfest will be at Bartlett, IL. Schedule for both events.

The Chicago Fall Showcase is also being held on the 30th, while the adidas Girls Basketball Fall Jamboree is held on October 1st.

The Future Collegiate High Exposure Basketball League is going on at Wisconsin Lutheran in Milwaukee WI.

The Fall Finish in Indianapolis has been cancelled. I hope someone will tell the Hawaiian team.

In the marquee match up of the day SPC with Angel Robinson downed their rival from across the river.
Tayler Hill opened the scoring for South with a three. Angel Robinson came right back for Central on the next possession. Central led the entire game except for one possession when Hannah Cheese broke a 10-10 tie with a feed from Ephesia Holmes. But Angel Robinson on the next possession gave it back to Central with a trey. That was the beginning of a 7 straight scoring possession drought by South. During that stretch Central took advantage with six more points to make it 19-12. When Holmes scored on a lay up to make it 19-14 Central got down to efficent business with 7 straight scoring possessions to close out the half. They led 34-22 at the break. Central's streak started with Abby Gust's 3. But the unlikely hero with six points in this stretch was Damara Kirkland. Kirkland made all her points on rebound put backs, her specialty. South wasn't able to get anything going offensively. Holmes wasn't able to shake free outside, other kids were taking shots and SPC and Kirkland were pickeing up boards.

Central led 36-22 early in the second half after a Robinson put back. That is when South started a rally. They outscored Central 12-4 during the stretch to cut the margin to 40-34. It started with a Hill 3, Maresha Anderson scored four points in two possessions and then finished up with an Ephesia Holmes basket and one on a drive. There was 7:01 left at the time. Then Robinson drilled two 3s in the next three possessions for Central to push the lead right back to 12 46-34. The rest of the game slowed down Central worked the clock to their advantage. When it was over SPC remained undefeated after beating the last undefeated team in the Blue 52-38.

Angel Robinson 22, 16, 137.5, .563 a tour de force today. came up with plays when plays were needed. Skys and hangs, Lockdown defender & disrupter. delivered touchdown passes to a streaking Theairra Taylor. Look at what Central did without her and with her. That is her value.
Theairra Taylor 7, 8, 87.5, .500 scored in transition. Did not hide but played strong. Guarded Hill.
Abby Gust 9, 11, 81.8, .364 after a poor first game made up for it with her shooting eye. Played with more comfort. Got her shot off in rhythm quickly. RF: needs to sharpen defensive skills.

RF: don't look for her to crack the SPC line up or rotation however. She won't get past Jones or Howard. both are bigger and quicker and have better offensive skills, but DK is a great role player. She will get the board. also contacts may be a good idea.

MINNEAPOLIS SOUTH
Tayler Hill 13, 15, 86.7, .333 still has a sweet stroke. explosive to the glass. RF: Lack of team movement hurt her shot opportunities. Central knew where she was.
Ephesia Holmes 8, 9, 88.9, .333 strong as she had two 2 & 1 plays on the day. RF: never got her distance game on track. her game kept in check by SPC D.
Hannah Cheese 4, 6, 66.7, .333 a force inside. A good solid player there. RF: took too many outside shots when I haven't seen that before

Central had a strong performance, moved well, clogged up the defensive lanes, set the tempo and pressure. And this was only half the squad.

Later in the day South beat Centennial White by double digits with Megan Nipe the main force for CW.
At Kennedy SPC #2 lost in overtime to Kennedy. Kennedy did not have Patrice Thomas and SPC did not have Megan Howard.

The second game featured a team from the Lake (Lakeville South) vs the Classic Lake (Armstrong). LS came out and scored on three possessions in a row early in the game. LS led 8-3 with Jennie Kalbfell scoring four. Armstrong was rather cold starting out 1/10 in their possessions. It should be noted that two players, Ali Gordon, the point guard from last year and Amanada Viehauser, the new transfer from Mpls Washburn, did not play in this game. In the PC game (I got there with about half the game to go) Gordon did not play, but Viehauser did, but didn't have a lot of buckets. With Viehauser out the main post that they had was Stephanie Loobeck. But she was injured in the middle of the first half as the play became quite physical. She got locked up with one of the Kalbfell's and damaged her shoulder it looked like. At least that is where the ice pack went. She was injured on Jennie Kalbfell's steal and lay up to make it 15-9 LS. Armstrong finished the half with 1/12 possessions, LS was in the neighborhood with 1/6 and led 18-11 at the break.

After Armstrong scored the first basket of the second half they went into hibernation (again). They didn't score on their next 8 possessions. There were 3 turnovers in the mix, but mainly it was just bad shooting. LS again kept pace with the ice cold shooting going 0/7 and 1/9 to start the half. But then LS clicked. They scored on five straight possessions and they went on an 11-6 run to push the score to 32-19. Jennie Kalbfell had four points in the run. #40 (if you have the roster send it to me so I can get the names up) had five including a 3. That 13 point lead was to be LS's high water mark. Armstrong scored 7 unanswered points to cut the margin to 32-25. Then LS scored on three possessions, but only made one free throw on two to make it 36-25. That is when Armstrong got out it's 3ball. #22 Dooher? hit two 3s in a row to cut the game to 36-31. Jennie K scored on a drive for LS to make it 38-31. Armstrong was in the midst of a 5/6 scoring spree to end the game. They canned three 3s (counting Dooher's) including Marschner's to make the score 40-36. Jennie K came back with two free throws to increase the margin. With time winding down LS won 43-38.

You can see the Armstrong's floor % was sub 300. They kept in the game, or made a game of it, by using the 3 ball. They connected on all five in the second half. LS was more aggressive going to the glass and making FT.

Later in the day LS led Chaska by five at half. At the end of the game Chaska won by 13.
After that Chaska played Centennial White and lost Courtney Boylan to an anlkle. After she left Centennial White went on a tear. These game reports from a reliable source.

Today was the second date, or half way through the MN Fall League.
Today I traveled to Robbinsdale Armstrong for the Blue or 1st league. Let me assure you that the 8 teams there are not the best teams in the state.

The first game I tracked was St. Paul Central and Eastview

ST. PAUL CENTRAL 36, EASTVIEW 30

SPC does have a divided squad. At Kennedy on Central 2 roster is Ebony Black, Kaira Buford, Megan Howard, Cyonna West. At Armstrong rostered are Angel Robinson, Theiarra Taylor, Georgie Jones and Abby Gust.

But in this first game Angel Robinson was a no show. It was early enough to interfer with religious obligations for some players. So the team was led by Theairra Taylor, a transfer in from Como Park. Jones is a newcomer from Highland Park. Jones got the scoring started on the first possession with a free throw, but for both teams the offense was sluggish. Central went 7 possessions without a score. During that time Eastview had seven unanswered points. Brittnye McSperron scored the first five points for Eastview on a 3 and a drive. Central got back with 7 points by Taylor with two 3s to tie it at 8. Eastview had their own 7 possession drought and most of these were on missed shots. The shooting eye isn't in form for any team yet. McSperron had a lay up to put Eastview up 10-8. Central scored three straight times to go up 14-10. Jones had four during the stretch. Eastview then scored on three straight to retake the lead 16-14. DaNae Moore had two in the stretch. They half ended with Eastview holding an 18-16 lead.

Central scored the first five points of the second half with Jones scoring three and Taylor two. The next two Eastview possessions went for scores including a three from Taylor Allen. That shot gave the Lightning the lead at 23-21. Two Central possessions later Taylor hit her own three. Eastview tied it on their next possession at 24. Central took the lead for good on Taylor's pull up jumper. The biggest margin SPC had was five until the end. Eastview did narrow it to three on a couple of occasions. the last at 33-30 on DaNae Moore's steal and layup. Aubrey Johnson finished the game with three free throws in two separate possessions to end it 36-30.

As true last week the possession rate is hovering around 53 possessions. Running 20 minute halves with stop time the las.t two minutes may have something to do with it.
SPC was more aggressive to the basket and had better quickness. But the Floor% numbers need to improve. Maybe it was the early AM time slot.

USA 3RD IN WORLDS
Team USA punished host Brazil 99-59 for third place in the FIBA World Championships. Ex Lynx Katie Smith had 6, Seimone Augustus had 2.
The Australians won the gold medal game with a 91-74 victory over Russia. The Aussies still are second in the FIBA Rankings after the win with the Americans still #1.
Of course the disection of the American loss to Russia has begun. I can sum it up pretty easily--When you shoot good, you look good. The Americans shot .386 the Russians .466; in 3 land it was .364 for USA for the Russians .571 and at the free throw line the Americans were an abysmal .462 while Russia was .684. The Russians also had 6 more FT attempts.

MICHIGAN ACTION
Earlier this week the #1A beat #1C. Yesterday it was #1B beating #1D as Detroit Country Day topped Frankfort 47-29. Frankfort's Breanna Bankston had 20 of the 29 for her team or 69%.

Zeeland East is having a rough start to the season. They are 1-6 after a loss to Mona Shores. Here is the Grand Rapids Press with more.

#8D Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart is 7-1 after beating previously undefeated St. Joseph Lake Michigan Catholic. The odd thing is they never say the final score in the article from the Mt. Pleasant Morning Sun.

WORDEN, LUND VERBALS
Tanaeya Worden, Sioux City North has verballed Southern Illinois. Worden averaged 13.3 ppg last season. The 5-5 guard is the second SC North player to verbal a D1 team from the 2007 class. Teammate Jacqui Kalin earlier verballed Northern Iowa. SC North 22-2 lost in the quarterfinals of the 2006 state tournament to Cedar Rapids Washington.
Also heading to Southern Illinois is Natalie Taylor of DePere, Wisconsin who made the verbal earlier this year.

Michelle Lund, Sioux City Heelan, has also made a verbal to a Missouri Valley team: Bradley.

Worden and Lund are the 7th and 8th HS players to have made a verbal to a D1 program from Iowa. In the states I cover, Iowa is in the lead with 8, Wisconsin is 2nd with 7, Michigan and Minnesota have 5.

Flint Central beat Flint Northern 58-54. It has been a rough start for these teams. Northern is a 6 time state champ and has not won a game at 0-7. From the Flint Journal.

RUMORS GONE WILD
I don't know if it is a wish fantasy or not, but the rumors are circulating in Michigan that the NCAA is going to switch its basketball season in the fall to avoid butting heads with the men's game. You can read more in the Rumors Gone Wild in the Detroit Free Press.

USA Loses to Russia in Worlds

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Team USA stumbled in the semifinals to Russia 75-68. Early in the tournament they beat the Russians 90-80. Now they will have to watch the Australians face Russia for the championships. The Americans will play the host Brazilians. The Americans fell behind early by 12. This loss snaps a 50 game winning streak dating back to the 1994 World championships. Katie Smith, ExLynx Katie Smith had 3 points. Current Lynx Seimone Augustus never got on the floor.

COACHING NEWS
WI
Gene Spindler has been hired at Menasha. He replaces Mike Schanhofer who was hired earlier, but had to step down due to glaucoma. For more on the story read the Appleton Post-Crescent.

Fall League Synopsis Week #1

MN FALL LEAGUE
As I expected the best teams are not all together in the Fall League, but spread out over three divisions. I can't believe all 8 teams in the Blue are better than the top team in the white. Next year someone give me a call before they put the schedules out so the best teams can knock heads.

INTERESTING RESULTS
St. Paul Central's #2 team beat Lakeville North last week 42-39 in the Red division.
Also in a game of note, Burnsville Black knocked off Kennedy in an exhibition game 36-27. This game doesn't count in the standings.
Centennial has split squads and they lost 37-29 to St. Paul Central. If Central had their full team there (I wasn't there) it is a positive sign for Centennial.
Tartan didn't show up for their Green games so Minnetonka and "Metro Ballers" each picked up foreit wins.
In the White Division Eden Prairie pulled off a 27-23 win over Hopkins.
THIS WEEK
On Sunday at Armstrong St. Paul Central will be playing two teams that started the FL at 2-0: Eastview and Mpls South.

USA TO SEMIS
Team USA beat Lithuania rather easily 90-56 in the World Championships in Brazil. Collegian Candace Parker led the Americans with 18. Ex Lynx Katie Smith had 10 points off the bench, Seimone Augustus, current Lynx player, had 3.

MICHIGAN RESULTS
Claire Conway made two free throws with under a minute to go to help Grosse Pointe South to a 41-39 victory. This game & more in the Detroit Free Press.

LATE TUESDAY
#9 A Flushing knocked off #4 A Grand Blanc in an upset 54-37 at home. A 25-9 fourth quarter did the trick for Flushing in this Big 9 contest.
Fenton beat Swartz Creek 51-44 in a Metro League match up.
A 53 game conference losing streak is now history as Mt. Morris bounced Montrose 46-37. Their last conference win came back on Nov. 12, 2002

A: Auburn Hills Avondale beat Pontiac Central 60-50
D: Frankfort beat Mesick 69-26
Both B: Detroit Country Day, and C Detroit Community were off.

The Jackson NW Mounties picked up another big win, this time over rival Jackson 41-37. It was coach Mark Hoyt's 300th win.
Michigan Center remained undefeated after an easy 58-26 Cascade Conference win over Hanover-Horton. Both from the Jackson Citizen Patriot.

Saginaw Arthur Hill bested rival Saginaw 66-50 in Saginaw Valley action.
Bullock Creek rallied to beat Freeland 51-47 in TriValley action. Both stories from the Saginaw News.

TRAINING & GAMES
Brian McCormick talks about the importance of training to improve quickness. I happen to agree. To many players fall in the trap of thinking games are going to get the player better. I have seen too many games and too many players that have not markedly improved from when I first saw them. The same items that needed improving in the winter still needed addressing in the summer. No one snapped my head this summer from previous watching like "Wow! she really improved!"

Players need to face up to their limitations, work on the less glamourous items, and not fall into the hamster in the wheel trap where they just run and run and don't get anywhere.

At Osseo I used to run the weight room in the spring and during the summer. It definitely helped verticles and quickness. Of course when the interval training came, players were scarce. But it saved some players from the cuts, and helped make all state players out of a few more.

MICHIGAN LATE GAMES
Kellie Watson of Ionia had a career best 41 in an overtime loss to Jackson NW 68-65. Here is the Ionia Sentinel-Standard with the win that got away.

RANKINGS
It seems everyone has a poll in Michigan. The AP is the main poll, but the UP has their own little poll. Newspapers also have area polls. Here are few to sort out.
South Christian is 3rd in the State AP B poll behind Detroit Country Day and DeWitt. But polls haven't always been kind to SC. From the Grand Rapids Press.
Chelsea has improved from a year a go by out working opponents and is now 8th in the Ann Arbor News Coaches poll.
Pickford is rated #1 in the UP D poll. This is the first time Pickford has ruled the roost. From the Escanaba Daily Press.
